Robert Merrill

Bob has over 22 years of Human Resources experience.  Bob earned his undergraduate degree in Liberal Arts with a minor in Education from the Pennsylvania State University in University Park, PA and went on to earn his Master of Business Administration, concentrating in Human Resources Management from Gannon University in Erie, PA.

Bob started his banking career in 1985 at Marine Bank in Erie, PA and worked in the bank’s Deposit Operations area for five years. 

In 1990, Bob went on to do recruiting and staffing for the bank and soon moved into the Employee Relations area.  At this time (1993), Marine Bank, who was an affiliate of PNC Financial Services, formally took the name of PNC Bank (1993).

With the transfer of PNC’s Northwest Region Human Resources Manager to Pittsburgh in 1997, Bob assumed the responsibilities of this position. 

In 1998, Bob had the opportunity to expand on his experience and accepted a position for PNC Credit Card Company in Charlotte, N.C. as Senior Employee Relations Manager.  In addition to his employee relations responsibilities for the Charlotte facilities, Bob was instrumental in and responsible for moving PNC’s Lafayette, Indiana credit card Customer Service Center to Charlotte, N.C.  Bob oversaw all severance management in addition to guiding all employees in the areas of relocation decisions and internal job posting activities.

In 1999, PNC sold their credit card operations to MBNA.  Bob was offered positions with both MBNA and PNC in other locations.  Bob, though, accepted the position of Director of HR for First National Bank of PA, headquartered in Hermitage, PA.  Bob stayed in this role until 2002 and moved to the position of Director of HR Administration at the time First National Bank acquired Promistar Financial, which increased the bank’s asset size form 1.5 billion to 4 billion dollars.  Branch network size increased from 82 to 124 branch offices.

Bob went on to support various HR administrative functions including orientation programs, HR training, tuition and scholarship programs, policy administration, employee handbook updates and internal audit compliance.  Bob was also the campaign chairman for the Annual Employee United Way Campaigns.  In addition to his administrative role, Bob served as the Human Resources Manager for the bank’s Technology Center, managing all recruiting, retention, staffing and employee relations for the center’s 325 employees.

In addition to his work responsibilities, Bob has served on the Financial Services Advisory Board for Southwest PA Workforce Development from 2002 to 2009 and is a volunteer for both the United Way of Mercer County and the Community Food Warehouse of Mercer County.  Bob is a member of the Society of Human Resources Management.

Bob retired from First National Bank of PA in August of 2012.  During his career at First National, the bank’s asset size tripled to almost 12 billion dollars and First National now operates 250 plus branch offices located throughout Pennsylvania and Northeastern Ohio with recent acquisition in 2013 expanding services into Maryland and the Cleveland, OH area.
